Light Painting

Passion Project Proposal

My passion project will photograph pictures like the picture above. I want to take portraits instead of objects. I might take in outdoor and use both phone and digital camera. I might use the phone to take the picture first, then sent to the digital camera and use the camera to take again in the same position and same light.

Heavy Things Won't Fly

SOOC: ISO:2500 f/3.5 Aperture:1/35

Reflection:
The prompt is asking us about the children's world. For the children, I think every child likes dolls which are their childhood partner. They usually sleep with dolls every day and sometimes talk with them even though dolls cannot talk in their childhood. In the child's heart, dolls are heavy things and will never fly away. The compositional element I used was the rule of third. I think my thoughts were successful because dolls are the heavy things for children and they will never fly in their heart. Even for me, I still have a lot of dolls in my bed. If I do again, I might choose the better light to take the picture or more creative.

Framing a Subject & Metering Mode Practice

Reflection:
What camera metering mode (evaluative/matrix, center-weighted or spot) did I use for each image and why?
- I used the camera metering mode which is center-weighted to take the pictures. Because I think center-weighted can more focus on the pictures rather than the backgrounds.

What white balance settings did I use for each image?
-  For the indoor pictures, I used the light to balance the image. And one of the pictures I took in the darkroom, so I used the sunlight to balance the light. For the outdoor picture, I used the natural light and the light from the cloud to balance.

Do I have a strong composition? Give specific support as to why/why not.
- I think I have a strong composition because I used some composition elements such as frame within the frame and centering.

What would I do differently if I shot this assignment again?
- I might choose different positions and be more specific elements.

Do you think your photo(s) should be considered as one of the best from your classmates? Why or why not?
- No, I do not think my photos should be considered as one of the best from my classmates. I think I still need to improve in many ways and I think most of them are better than me.

Field trip

SOOC:  ISO:800  f/1.8   Aperture: 1/85
Reflection:

What challenges did you encounter photographing and editing this image?
- Before taking this kind of photography, I don't even know how to use a flasher to take a portrait. It challenges me to follow all the steps of using flasher and reflector to take pictures and setting.

How did you overcome these challenges?
- Try many times to set all the function to take the perfect portrait. I also try to put the reflector in the best position and make sure the light is on the face.
What side of the reflector (white, silver, black, or gold) did you use to bounce the flash and why? How did it affect your image?
- I used the silver side. Because I think silver side has better light to reflect on people's face. When I make the flasher face to the reflector, it bounces the flash.

What setting did you use on the flash? (TTL or Manual)
- I used the flash on Manual.

Do you like your image in black and white or color more? Why?
- I do like the image in black and white because it more focuses on the person instead of the background.

What would you do differently if you did it again?/What would make it better?
- If I do again, I might take the picture under the sunlight rather than in a dark place.

New Beginning

SOOC:

Edited:

ISO: 6400  Shutter speed: 1/320  Aperture: 4.5

Reflection: I shot a makeup powder and a lipstick for New Beginning. The composition I use is Leave Negative Space. For this picture, these two things were bought when I first came to the United States and started to do makeup. I think that's my new beginning which was from a little girl to a lady. Began to realize that I let myself to look good in front of others. So I think it's my new beginning.

Cyanotypes Post

Reflection:
For this project, I think it was so cool. The Cyanotype project let me know that how to from negative change to positive and reflect the image on the paper finally. Let me feel that it was so complicated to take one photo before. However, we have the digital cameras so we can take pictures in a second. If I do this again, I will choose an image of the portrait because I think portraits can better reflect on the paper and look better. I also will put the paper longer time under the sun so that the contrast will be better.

History of Imaging

Two of the photo processes: Tintype and the photogenic drawing are the different types of photo processes. The tintype was first described by Adolphe-Alexandre Martin in France in 1853. The tintype is a photograph made by making a direct positive film on a sheet of metal coated with dark paint or enamel and using it as a carrier for photographic emulsions. The photogenic drawing was invented by William Henry Fox Talbot. This photo process needs to prepare by soaking it in a weak standard salt solution, drying it, scrubbing it with silver nitrate solution, and then further cleaning it in a strong standard salt solution. Exposure is usually through contact printing, as long as there is an image.

Most interesting one: The photo process that the most interested me is photogenic drawing. After I search and know about this photo process, I think that is an amazing process. When I see some pictures that use in the photogenic drawing, I think those pictures are the great achievements. Although this photo process would need a lot of materials and have many steps, I think the more photographic materials and steps, the more better pictures. And I esteem all the photographers to photograph each picture so perfectly that it can be presented to people.

Assignment #31 MAD

I use my 50mm prime lens to photograph. First, I cut some pieces of the circle and cut the shapes in the middle of the circle. Then I put them in front of my lens. The last step is to use my camera to photograph the lights.
